banquetOften times when I am faced with many homeschool decisions with a plethora of options, I imagine a long banquet table filled with lots of delicious foods placed in beautiful bowls or platters. All the food on the table has been prepared with nutritious ingredients made by loving hands. The finest of china and silver are used and the music of parents’ and children’s laughter is heard throughout the banquet hall. Someone hands me a plate, and I proceed to carefully select the foods which best appeal to me. My plate will only hold so much; therefore, I want to make sure to create a balanced meal. By the time I come to the end of the table, my plate is stuffed. I cannot possibly put one more thing on or it will fall off. Now it is time to sit down and enjoy a wonderful meal.

NHEA offers many wonderful opportunities for the homeschooling family throughout the year and at times it can be overwhelming choosing what is best for you family. Picture if you will, the banquet table as the school year. The food dishes prepared are the many opportunities that NHEA volunteers have made with their time and love for you to enjoy. The plate is a school schedule and what you put on the plate is your choice. Not all the choices will appeal to you as the "best" for your family, but most likely there will be so many activities to choose from that you will have a difficult time deciding.

Some people will overload their plate wanting a taste of everything and inevitably something will fall off and you won’t even notice (how embarrassing). Some have scanned the table before hand and know exactly what they want on their plate and how much. Others will fill their plate full only to find they have three socials, one academic event, and 25 field trips (ugh).

All NHEA field trips, socials, activities, mega-fest, co-ops, newsletters, testing, kick-off meetings, etc. have been carefully planned with a purpose in mind. NHEA wants to "promote high quality home education programs for the purpose of developing Christ-like character, and assist in satisfying the spiritual, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of our children. We plan and conduct activities, seminars, and other educational opportunities to provide information and training that will assist parents in home education" (Bylaw III.)

The school year is quickly coming to an end, and there are still many decisions to be made in the last few months. Review the NHEA calendar and prayerfully choose what you will put on your plate. I would like to make a recommendation that for a sweet dessert, attend Graduation 2010 in May. You will be encouraged by the smiling faces of the graduates and be inspired from the speeches of the seniors.

Thank you to all the volunteers for bringing your best to the table and letting us enjoy the fruits of your labor. The banquet table is full because of you.

God Bless,
